CapRescue is preparing to celebrate a major milestone in 2026, marking 30 years of providing critical rescue services across Central Queensland. What began as a small community-backed initiative in the mid-1990s has grown into a vital, 24/7 lifeline for regional, rural and remote communities—responding to thousands of emergencies across land, sea and air.
“I can hardly believe it’s been 30 years since our first helicopter touched down on the beachfront at Yeppoon. What has been achieved by this community is remarkable. From small things, big things have truly grown. Every mission flown is a credit to the committee, the supporters, and the crews who have carried this service forward,” — John Bavea, CapRescue Founder.
To honour three decades of service, CapRescue is inviting the whole community to join a series of events throughout 2026. They aim to offer something for everyone—families, social groups, sports enthusiasts, food lovers and local businesses—embracing the diversity of the communities CapRescue serves.
The celebrations will begin in March with the much-loved Colour Me Capricorn, a bright and energetic fun-run that rolls out across multiple CQ communities. Known for its festive atmosphere and huge family turnout, it sets the tone for a year centred on fun, connection and cause.
April sees the first ever CapRescue Charity Race Day, an event that brings together racing fans, local businesses and supporters for an afternoon of entertainment and fundraising at the Rockhampton Jockey Club.
Sporting fans will also enjoy two golf events during the year—one in Rockhampton and one in Gladstone—offering friendly competition and a relaxed chance to support the rescue service.
In June and August, CapRescue will bring their service to the community in Rockhampton and Gladstone respectively. These Community Open Days give locals the rare chance to step behind the scenes, meet the crew, and see the helicopter up close. It’s one of the most interactive ways for families to learn how the service operates and why community support remains so crucial.
he celebrations reach their most glamorous moment in July with the CapRescue Charity Ball, a signature event that blends entertainment and the heart of the service. Guests will enjoy pre-dinner drinks beside the helicopter before moving into a night of dining, live entertainment and fundraising.
For those who prefer a culinary experience, the CapRescue Degustation in September will deliver a premium six-course menu showcasing local ingredients, paired with drinks, all presented by chef Matt Golinski.
CapRescue’s 30-year milestone is, at its heart, a community achievement. The service has long been sustained by a combination of highly trained crew, devoted staff, dedicated volunteers and the generosity of individuals, families, clubs, businesses and industry partners across the region.
As CapRescue moves toward this 30-year milestone, there’s a genuine sense of pride in what the region has built together. This service exists because the community believed in it from the beginning and continues to stand behind it today. The year ahead is about acknowledging that shared effort and celebrating the people who have shaped CapRescue into the trusted rescue service it is for Central Queensland.” — Darren Pirie, CEO.
Many of the 2026 events offer opportunities for local organisations to be involved—whether through attending, partnering or supporting the service behind the scenes. But above all, CapRescue hopes the year will be enjoyed by the people who rely on and champion the service.
