CapRescue has marked 30 years of serving Central Queensland, using the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on its history while looking ahead to the future of aeromedical rescue in the region.
From its first rescue on February 18, 1996, to today’s complex aeromedical operations, the service has grown alongside the communities it supports. That growth has been shaped by strong local backing, trusted partnerships and a shared commitment to ensuring people across the region can access critical care when it matters most.
Former paramedic and long-serving board member Mark Tobin was on board for the first rescue and said the service was built on community belief from the outset.
“Thirty years ago, CapRescue introduced a new generation of emergency medical response for Capricornia and surrounding regions,” Mr Tobin said. “The community got behind the idea of a rescue helicopter and supported it from day one. Over time, that support has helped shape a service the region can rely on.”
Chief Executive Officer Darren Pirie said the anniversary recognises those early foundations while reinforcing the importance of preparing for what comes next.
“Reaching 30 years is significant, but it’s not about standing still,” Mr Pirie said. “It’s about ensuring CapRescue is ready for what the next 30 years will require from an aeromedical service in a growing and diverse region.”
Federal Member for Capricornia Michelle Landry MP said CapRescue has become an essential part of the region’s emergency response network.
“When emergencies strike, CapRescue is there,” Ms Landry said. “Over three decades it has become a vital part of our emergency response capability, and the region is safer because of the service’s dedication and expertise. Congratulations on this significant milestone.”
CapRescue’s aeromedical partner, Babcock Australasia, continues to support operations through aircraft, aviation expertise and safety systems that underpin the service.
Babcock Australasia Managing Director Aviation and Critical Services Duncan Milne said the partnership has played a key role in delivering care across Central Queensland.
“Babcock is proud to work in partnership with CapRescue to deliver lifesaving helicopter emergency medical services to regional Queensland, ensuring the community receives support when it is needed,” Mr Milne said.
“Babcock operates, crews and maintains the aircraft to support 24/7 operations. This aligns closely with CapRescue’s role supporting more than 300,000 Central Queensland residents at a time when they are most vulnerable. Congratulations to CapRescue on reaching this milestone.”
As CapRescue enters its fourth decade, the focus remains on the community that has supported the service from the beginning—maintaining operational readiness, strengthening partnerships and ensuring access to critical aeromedical care across the Capricorn region at no cost to patients.
