National Student Volunteer Week

Across Australia, thousands of student volunteers were celebrated and congratulated during National Student Volunteer Week (NSVW), held from the 9th – 15th of August 2021. NSVW was intended to empower student volunteers, strengthen relationships, and help build a new generation of volunteers.

Together, with Volunteering QLD, we recognised the significant skills, ideas, enthusiasm, creativity, and time young people, particularly our StepUp CapRescue Student Volunteers, supported by Thiess, contribute through volunteering.

During NSVW, we showcased the fantastic work our youngest volunteers do for our vital service. Stefani, one of our newest student volunteers to StepUp shared why she chose us.

“CapRescue stands as a beacon of hope for the community. I think it is important for people to know and understand that someone will always be there for them during times of need,” Stefani Seumanu – an Active Volunteering student at Tannum Sands State High School and StepUp CapRescue Volunteer.

NSVW also introduced students to the personal and professional benefits of volunteering, including valuable work experience, enhanced feelings of self-worth, refinement of values, increased understanding of people, local and global issues, and reduced social isolation.

“I believe that volunteering can help develop life skills, help students become more competent and employable, and open up new learning pathways and opportunities,” Stefani.

“We’re proud to support the incredible StepUp CapRescue Volunteer program and to see its impact, not just amongst volunteers, but the wider community,” said Anthea Craig, Thiess’ Group Manager – Community, Diversity and Inclusion.

“What better way to celebrate their valuable contribution than during NSVW.”

RACQ CapRescue partners with Volunteering QLD to offer secondary school students the opportunity to complete a Certificate I, II, or III in Active Volunteering, which was recognized during NSVW. Students completing the course carry out volunteering activities such as collecting donation boxes, assisting at fundraising events, creating social media content and more.
